More randomness

1 - If tonight I keep up the progress I've made this week, I could enter the 3-day weekend caught up on dishes and laundry! And since I vacuumed last weekend, I wouldn't need to think about doing the floors this weekend either. (One advantage of having a house that's too big is that the cat hair has plenty of room to spread out, so I don't feel like I have to vacuum weekly...even thought I probably should. Baby steps.) This would allow me to use chore time for de-cluttering and working on my office. And it means that I can't probably limit chore time to daytime without guilt. :-)

2 - It was not as cold at the bus stop this morning as I thought it would be. Yes, it was 12 degrees. But I was pretty well bundled, I was warm from wrangling Heather into her clothes and outerwear and the wind wasn't too bad in our neighborhood. It definitely felt colder downtown with the wind and I don't plan to leave the building at lunchtime. Brrrr.

3 - After a little work on my Amelia sleeve last night, I did a little work on the Samus cable, too. I just can't resist the enjoyment of the cable work. Especially compared to the repetition of knitting stockinette in the round. Hope to be on Amelia sleeve #2 sometime this weekend and I still need to cast on a bib or some baby item.

4 - I admit that I am regularly watching The Biggest Loser this season. Usually I just turn it on when there is nothing else on. But I realized last season that it is more enjoyable to watch when you can fastforward through the many commercials, the "commercials" within the show and the videos that are played both before and after the commercial breaks. So I have been recording it on the DVR. But I won't hesitate to delete episodes if there is a backlog of scripted programming to watch. I'm not *that* addicted.

5 - I'm ready for the premiere of Battlestar Gallactica tomorrow night, the continuation of CSI's season tonight and anxious for the return of LOST next week. And I'm still laughing out loud (literally) at least once an episode (if not more) at The Big Bang Theory. I'm very happy that it seems to be doing well in the ratings. I'm interested to see "Dollhouse" (Joss Whedon) next month, too.

6 - Despite all of this TV happiness, I think it stinks that ABC probably won't be airing the remaining episodes of "Pushing Daisies". Boo.

7 - R keeps taunting me for not reporting a certain cute Heather-ism on the blog, despite the fact that he has a blog of his own where he could note such things. Since he has a cold, I'm going to cut him some slack and make him happy.
Even though she used to detest having her nose wiped, she will now ask for a nose wipe about 50% of the time that she needs one. She will also request "nose wipe finger" if she used her finger to detect that a nose wipe is in fact needed and now said finger needs to be wiped with a tissue as well.

8 - I'm trying to decide whether I'm going to take the day off on my birthday. I'm already taking two days off next month, so it seems a little excessive. But at the same time I need to take a day or two off before May and send Heather to school because there is no way that I'm going to finish my office with just weekend work... Decisions, decisions. I guess I'm kind of waiting to see how the next few weeks of work shake out. If February looks like it's going to be really busy it probably isn't worth it. But if things stay as they are (busy but not crazy) then it is probably doable.

9 - I'm trying to figure out what to serve for Heather's birthday dinner. Something not to hard to make for a big group and something that there is a chance that Heather will actually eat. Although that second requirement is totally unpredictable...the other night her dinner was strawberries and a few bites of bread after ten minutes of not wanting anything. Ah, toddlerdom!

"I keem"

We went out to dinner tonight after an extended session at the playground. We chose a burger place a few doors down from an ice cream shop.

After dinner we loitered outside for a few minutes because they have some raised curbs around the planters that Heather likes to walk on. (She likes to walk on any raised curb, wall, stone, etc - its a highlight of several of our regular neighborhood jaunts.)

I was waiting to see if she was done walking the wall, and R was looking at something on his iPhone, and the next thing we know Heather starts saying "I keem, I keem, I keem" and pointing at the ice cream shop.

Guess we have to be careful where we hang out from now on. ;-)

-------------------------

On an unrelated note, I think it is awesome that The Yarn Harlot coined a new word that is credited in the New York Times. Unsurprisingly proof of her abilities to appeal to a large audience, not just an audience of knitters. I also think it is cool that Mr. Kinnear called her the Michael Jordan of knitters on national TV, but I think it stinks that he assumes that all knitters are female...

Podcasts

(If you don't care about knitting or my interest in podcasts, then you can just skip this post)

I've alluded to the podcasts that I listen to a few times and I've been meaning to do a post about them for a while. They've become kind of an obsessive part of my daily commute and I only wish that I can the kind of job that would allow me to listen to them at work, too. But I find that there is too much competition between trying to listen to the talking and the thinking I have to do for my job.

I've listed the podcasts that I'm really committed to in the sidebar of my blog. If you want to give one a try, I would listen to a current episode and see what you think. If you like it, you can subscribe via iTunes or another program (I know there are others, but I'm not familiar with them since I use iTunes) and go back and listen from the beginning. In some cases this will give you hours of entertainment and for some of the newer ones it won't take you long to catch up.

I listen to podcasts for a few reasons. 1 - There are some great interviews with knitting designers and knitting celebrities that you can't find anywhere else. I seriously stalk iTunes for any podcast where the Yarn Harlot is interviewed. 2 - Discussion of patterns and yarns that I haven't heard of before. This is kind of like finding patterns and yarns in ravelry, except that I don't have to be staring at a computer screen. 3 - Getting to listen to other people talk about knitting. Maybe if there were more TV shows about knitting I wouldn't need the podcasts, but there is just something nice about infusing my brain with yarn related dialogue. 4 - News and reviews. Magazines and blogs are fine ways to here what is "new" in the knitting world, but podcasts are much more immediate than magazines and I can't read blogs (easily) while knitting or commuting.

Cast On was my first, and probably still my favorite knitting podcast. Brenda's voice is lovely, she produces a very professional program, she has themes for each series of 10-12 episodes and I just like listening to her stories. But once I caught up on all of the old episodes I had to find some new options since Brenda is currently producing her show only 1-2 times a month.

I posted on Ravelry in the Brenda Dayne Fan Club forum for suggestions on other podcasts to listen to. I knew that I would be hard pressed to find another podcaster as professional as Brenda, but I thought that getting the opinions of fellow fans would get me going in the right direction. (There are lots of knitting podcasts out there now!)

My next podcasts were Stash and Burn, the Knit Picks Podcast and Sticks & String. All three were enjoyable and it took a few months to go back and listen to all of the back episodes since they had all been around for over a year. Stash and Burn is kind of like hanging out with two knitting friends who are as obsessive about yarn as I am. They are both a little more obsessive about the size of their stash than I am, but I really enjoy listening to them chat and they've had some nice interview shows, too. I was a little concerned about the Knit Picks Podcast being too commercial, since it is run by a yarn company, but it is really much more about Kelly and good technique advice. There is certainly some mention of their yarn and new products. But other than the lengthy discussion of their new sock blanks I haven't felt and commercial pressure at all. Kelly and I can be very different knitters (that much garter stitch would make me want to poke my eyes out), but I really like her book reviews and we both like knitting lace. And I think the advantage of being "in the business" is that she gets some really interesting people on to interview on the show. Sticks & String didn't click with me at first, but it only took a few episodes for David to get in a groove and for me to get hooked. David's style is probably the one that most closely matches Brenda Dayne's, but being a male knitter in Australia, he has some interesting points of view to bring to the table. I also really appreciate his fearlessness and his clear agreement with me that colorwork in knitting looks harder than it is, so there is no reason to be scared of new techniques. David also had a great set of interviews in his last series and I'm looking forward to more.

Newer podcasts that I've enjoyed include Craft, Rock, Live with Vickie Howell and YKnit. Vickie's show is less specifically about knitting and more about crafting in general. I get the impression that she is more herself on the podcast (no influence from TV producers) and she's had some interesting interviews. She's just started her second series and I plan to keep listening. YKnit is produced more sporadically and seems to be very focused on interviews and events. It is really well produced and the hosts are two male knitters in California. Sometimes the humor is a little immature, but it is a fun show and probably better for an afternoon commute than a morning bus ride.

My primary non-knitting podcasts are the Tuned In podcast, hosted by the local paper's TV critic and the two podcasts of the American Theatre Wing. The TV critic likes a lot of the same shows that I do, so I always enjoy getting the inside scoop and opinions on my favorite (sometimes obscure shows). And the ATW shows have great interviews, but they tend to be my fill-in podcasts when I get caught up on knitting shows.

I'm currently catching up on Ready, Set, Knit, which is the podcast of WEBS yarn store. It's certainly the most commercial of the bunch, and I sometimes skip the knit-alongs or lists of their newest closeouts, but I enjoy the format and they have some good interviews. When I do listen to the knit-along sections I have picked up some good knitting tips, so it just depends what they're working on.

Once I get caught up on my current shows, I plan to give the following podcasts a try:
Craftsanity
Knit Sciene
Knitcast (this one is out of production, so I only have the archives to listen to)
Knitmoregirl's Podcast
Math4Knitters
Its a Purl, Man

I owe all of the podcast craziness to Amy at knitty.com. She mentioned the Cast On podcast in her blog, and I checked it out, and the rest is history. :-)

(I'm a bad wife and I don't have R's podcast listed in the sidebar. This is because I'm a really bad wife and I haven't listened to them even though I am subscribed. As soon as I stop being a bad wife, I'll put up a link.)

Tuesday List

There is too much going on to focus my post on one topic. Sometimes I feel like I should just be able to download the blog posts that I think of during the day directly from my head. That might make these things more coherent. :-)

1 - I think I've mentioned before that I've been watching "Gilmore Girls" in syndication on ABC Family. We are nearing the end of Season 6, and according to the DVR they are looping back to the pilot next week. :-( I just checked on amazon.com and season 7 isn't going to be released on DVD until November 13th. :-( I guess in the best case, I will be able to find Season 7 at Blockbuster and there will only be a week or so of suspense until I get to see how it all ends.

2 - With that meme last week I was delighted to see how many of my friends watch Battlestar Galactica! I almost feel like we should have a party when the next season starts.

3 - Heather's sleeping habits. The good news is that on Friday, she went to sleep at 9pm and slept for over 11 hours straight. And her sleeping the rest of the weekend was generally good. One overnight wake-up and decent bedtimes. But now the confusing part. Last night she fell asleep nursing around 6:30. Then she woke up and nursed again at 8:30. And we couldn't get her to sleep again until 11:30. :-( My first theory was that she had crappy naps yesterday. But no, she had a good one and an okay one. Tonight, she fell asleep on her daddy's lap at 7:20 and she had two good naps today. I don't know if she's taking annoying evening naps that disrupt her bedtime or if she's working on an earlier bedtime. Assuming that she is going to wake up again this evening, I plan to try to nurse her and put her right back to sleep. I was almost able to do it last night but I wasn't trying hard enough.
...So...she woke up about 8 and slept/nursed in my arms for half an hour and went back to sleep. Cross your fingers.

4 - I'm not sure what I'm going to do on the bus tomorrow. I finished my socks on the bus today. I started another baby sweater over the weekend, but the gauge is off and I don't know if I can find the needles I need quickly. I may have to start another pair of socks or use the leftovers from my socks to make a pair for Heather.

I'm pretty sure there is more, but I am fading and I need to get a few other things done before crashing in bed as soon as possible.

Less than a month to go (probably) - My back, a party and TV catch-up

I hit 36 weeks this weekend. On Saturday, this pregnancy will be full term.

Our child will likely be born 2-6 weeks from now.

The most popular question at the moment is whether we are ready. Honestly, I don't know that anyone is really ever ready, so I just keep saying that we're about as ready as we're going to be. There are a few more chapters of a couple more books that I would like to read. There is a little more painting and knitting I'd like to get done. There are a few more things we plan to buy during the next credit card period. But really, if she arrived tomorrow we wouldn't be caught totally off guard.

(Okay, I haven't packed my hospital bag yet, and I have tickets to a show tomorrow night that I'd like to see...but otherwise we wouldn't be caught off guard. ;-)

I had a back relapse on Thursday afternoon. It never got quite as bad as it did Thanksgiving weekend, but it lasted longer and required tylenol and heat to totally go away. In this case I blame vacuuming and mopping from Wednesday night - so those are off-limits tasks for a while. Hopefully the house won't get too bad...or if it does I will be able to convince R to deal with it.

In order to continue using the heating pad and to take multiple breaks, I worked a half day from home on Friday. I completed the task I had intended and got a little straightening up done in preparation for Saturday. I had considered going into work in the afternoon if I was feeling okay, but I took a surprising 1 1/2 hour nap at 10:30 (I didn't think I was that tired...) and the possibility of going in went out the window. Especially as I sat in the cozy house watching the snow fall outside...

Saturday was the "Meet Marcus and Max Party" at our house. It was a lovely time and we actually had four small children in attendance - Finn @ 8 weeks, Max @ 5 months, Marcus @ 9 months and Vivian @ 1 year. They were all well-behaved and fun to watch. It was great to spend the afternoon with some of my favorite ladies and get to see their little ones in action. I was a little worried that it would be overwhelming and put some fear in to me about what we have to expect, but it was actually pretty reassuring. I realize that our newborn might not sleep as much as Finn seemed to or be as content being held by others as Marcus is...but even the occasional crying and fussiness didn't freak me out too much, especially since they all seemed to be so "easily" calmed by their mothers. (I put that in quotes because it might not seem so easy to all of the mothers, but it seemed like it to me!) All I had to do was straighten up the house (which has the added bonus of leaving us with a mostly clean house afterward), make the Stouffer's lasagna and clean-up afterward. Very easy, even at 8 months pregnant. ;-)

Between my recovery time on Thursday evening and last night, R and I got "caught up" on LOST and Battlestar Galactica. We finished watching Season 2 of LOST and rewatched all but one of the Season 3 episodes from the DVR (finally, we have space again!). For BSG, we had recorded the Season 3.0 marathon from 1/15, although somehow it didn't record the first three. :-( We read the episode synopses and I'll be on the lookout for them. The Season 3.5 premiere of BSG was last night, and we finished the last episode of 3.0 20 minutes before it aired. Timing is everything. :-) I didn't stay up to watch it, though I did watch the opening sequence before going up to get ready for bed just to make sure that Adama wasn't going to nuke the planet.

Both for the sake of the DVR and our sanity, it is nice to be caught up on both series. It wasn't even too confusing when we were watching alternate episodes of each one. :-) I realize I am not a "typical" female for enjoying Science Fiction, but I think it is really the genre that R and I enjoy the most together. We're each willing to watch other things that the other enjoys (TV and movies), but I think Science Fiction (a over the top comedies by Mel Brooks, Steve Martin, etc) are where we have the most interest in common. Although I'm a bit more dis-interested by series I haven't seen from the beginning. I really didn't get into BSG until we watched from the beginning, and I had a similar reaction to Firefly and LOST (though not really science fiction, I think it has elements in common).

I also think the DVR is going to be a savior when we have an infant in the house!

Lots of Shopping

We're getting there.

Two hours in IKEA resulted in:
lunch
A 42" high Billy bookcase + an extension (baby's room)
A RAST drawer unit (for the bathroom for the baby's bathtub)
Four Ekarp lamps, two with Arden Bloom shades (our bedroom) and two with Alfhild Fagel shades (baby's room)
Four Jarpen shelves with Eight Hall brackets (2 sets for baby's room, 2 sets for my room)
And a cutting board for the kitchen (I don't remember the name)

Then we went to Target:
We returned the car seat that just failed Consumer Reports' tests

They didn't have the seat we wanted in stock, so we used the gift card to get:
3 hooded towels
A Boppy and 2 Boppy slipcovers
A thermometer
A baby grooming kit
Lanisoh cream
2 nursing bras and 2 nursing camisoles (you probably don't really need to know that, but I mention it for completeness :-)

At Home Depot we bought:
A new cordless drill (mine stopped recharging)
batteries
Green paint and roller covers for Rudy's room
drywall screws for hanging the shelves

After some time spent putting together and installing some of our purchases, we settled down to watch some episodes of LOST. During which time I browsed the internet for the car seat we want. I found the one I wanted at sears.com, and I ordered it to pick it up at the store. Which saves me from going from store to store to find the one we want. Plus, I was able to look at all of the fabrics available from Graco, and choose the one I like the best. Having been prepared to take whatever I could get, this makes me happy.

It might not be totally finished, but i think the baby's room will be in great shape by the time people come next Saturday and we have almost everything on the "must purchase before the baby's born" list.

Tomorrow - completion of shelf construction, painting, knitting with friends and more painting

Redecorating

I've finally explored the new template and editing options in the new version of Blogger. The new color scheme is closer to what I wanted all along, but I didn't want to spend the time editing the HTML before. My changes still required a little HTML work to get the image I wanted at the top and not the standard template header. I will probably do some more work on the image at some point and maybe even figure out how to do a continuous band of color behind it. But it's not bad for someone who got her main HTML "training" in 1994...

My back bothered me almost all day yesterday, and therefore I spent the evening on the couch. I began sewing up the sheep bootees (I think it is taking longer to sew up the pieces than it took to knit them - ugh) and we watched more Battlestar Galactica. We're now into Season 2.5 and the ruthlessness and cruelty of Admiral Kane has me astounded. It makes me somewhat glad that we've seen bits and pieces of Season 3, so I know that Commander Adama has to survive somehow...

For the bus this week, I've picked up an old pair of socks that were "finished" but need reworking. I had the yardage to make pretty tall socks (toe-up) and I waited too long to add calf shaping the first time around. So I frogged back to the ankle and am working up the first leg again. It's nice to be making something for me that I don't have to worry whether or not it will fit post-pregnancy. (I don't have the impression that my feet have gotten bigger as a result of the pregnancy, although I should probably put on an old pair of shoes to see for sure.

Tonight is our infant care class. I am surpriseingly excited about it. I think because it is the last big thing we need to "learn" before Baby M joins us, and because I am anxious to see how R responds to it. I'm sure he will be a great Dad, but I'm glad he was interested in going to the class, too. I'm not going to be the only one changing diapers around here!

Progress

I didn't get quite as much done over the week off as I had wanted to, but given my lack of physical stamina I probably shouldn't be surprised. I also did things like watching TV while writing thank you notes, which slows down the process considerably.

Accomplished:
I finished writing all of the thank you notes for baby-related items. This includes everything that Miss M got for the shower and for christmas. This, in itself, is a big accomplishment...it just isn't one that is visible in the house...

I finished all of the non-mural painting in the baby's room. The closet door, closet shelf, window sill and door to my office are all now painted.

Most of the things that don't belong on the first floor have been moved to their proper locations. The "clutter" began to develop the weekend of the shower and only got worse after christmas. There are still some empty boxes, old laptops and miscellaneous items that don't belong where they are, but the situation is under much better control than it was on December 26th. :-)

Two knitted hats to donate to "Caps to the Capitol". They'll be in the mail as of lunchtime today - which is the submission deadline.

The watching of many episodes of Battlestar Gallactica. We watched all of Season One and I think we're nearing the midpoint of Season Two. I'm enjoying it much more now that we've started from the beginning. Watching random Season Two and Season Three episodes wasn't doing much for me. The show is too serialized and there are too many characters for me to get into it later on.

Lastly, some errands were run. I got a few more baby items with a coupon that expired at the end of the year and some christmas money. We still have more needs, but we will at least wait until the next credit card period to make another dent. And some things can wait until February, too. I don't think we'll need the stroller from day one...especially in winter. Although when you consider the warm winter we've been having, it certainly doesn't seem impossible that Miss M and I could go out for walks before spring.
